Sec. Xavier Becerra Endorses Yes On Prop 3 to Stop Billions in Cuts to California

Former U.S. HHS Secretary and California Attorney General joins coalition to protect a funding stream that has backed classrooms, community college, and Medi-Cal for nearly 15 years

SACRAMENTO, CA — Secretary Xavier Becerra has endorsed Proposition 3, the California Children's Education and Health Care Protection Act, joining a broad coalition working to stop billions of dollars in automatic cuts to California schools, community colleges, and health care.

"Every California child deserves a fully funded classroom, regardless of their zip code," said Secretary Becerra. "Yes on Prop 3 asks the wealthiest residents in the state to keep paying their share — the same rate they've paid for nearly 15 years — so our schools and community colleges have the resources students need to thrive, while protecting the same revenue base that keeps Medi-Cal strong for California families."

Background:

Proposition 3 is not a new tax. Yes on Prop 3 protects California schools and access to health care by keeping in place existing tax rates on the wealthiest 2% of Californians that voters approved in 2012 – raising roughly $10 billion a year for schools, community colleges, and Medi-Cal. If those rates expire, it would give millionaires and billionaires a massive tax cut at the expense of our classrooms, clinics, and communities.

Prop 3 is backed by a broad coalition including the California Teachers Association, California Nurses Association, California Professional Firefighters, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, SEIU California, and goes before the voters on the November 2026 ballot.
